Although, Adventure Bike Riding is obviously focused on bike riding I can’t help but include my other adventuring love, adventure moto touring. There are many parallels between bike touring and moto touring, in fact many of the philosophies, gear and approaches are similar. The biggest difference being one goes by pedal power the other by a motor and throttle. When I purchased my first dual sport motor cycle many claimed my bike touring days were over, well I was happy to prove them wrong, I do love to moto tour but there is something more romantic, more pure about bike touring, plus I love having to earn every mile with my own power.
There are pluses to moto touring, for starters some of the obvious. The distance one can cover far exceeds that of a bike. For example we wanted to ride the continental divide route during the summer of 2010, unfortunately no one could get the two months of work that it would require to fully enjoy the trip riding bikes. On the other hand three weeks was a little more reasonable, enter the motorcycle.
Since you have horse power working for you, you have a more flexibility in what you can bring with you, like a bike a motorcycle only has so much room, and over loading can decrease handling and hamper performance, but weight is not quite as much of a factor as it is with a bike.
In a bike tour senerio, generally you are committed to the route you have chosen, the ability to deviate is limited as every mile you pedal out of your way is one you have to pedal back. Checking out side interests or deviating from a set route is much easier with a motorcycle, your only limited by the gas you have.
I would want anyone to think that I’m not a purest when it comes to bike touring, but generally I see an adventure separate from the the tool that I chose to best enjoy that adventure with. Majority of the time it is riding my mountian bike, sometimes my road bike and as much bike touring as I can get away with, but there are times when the moto just makes more sense and is the better tool for the job.
So if you are interested in moto touring as well as bike touring stay tuned, we will continue to develop adventure moto touring with the same philosophies that we put into Adventure Bike Riding.
